Overall Impressions
This one was not as straightforward an analysis of prior "From the Desk of AI" posts. Rather than finding red flags or clear areas to tweak along the way, we shift focus toward a fundamental, ethical issue with transparency and using AI-powered content responsibly.
WHY THE CHANGE?
The Power Behind a Good Prompt
By deliberately addressing the shortcomings of prior prompts, the output this time was much better. The overall experience had a better, more digestible flow. We started to enjoy the "author's voice" , and began entrusting them.
For the first time, we found ourselves embracing an AI-generated "expert opinion" thought leadership article. As we read along, we unintentionally started fabricating a humanlike persona of the "author".
Much to our surprise, we even subconsciously started envisioning the extensive experience that this expert "author" must have had in order to be able to provide such insightful, digestible insights.
When the Trust Comes Out
There was a moment when we realized we had been deceived. The machine had altered its algorithm in such a way that it convinced us of the content's authenticity, even though we knew it was generated by AI. It only took a few words to completely change our perspective, and this made us reflect on the cause and impact of being duped.
While the overall experience was significantly improved, there were occasions when something in the piece would rub us the wrong way. It wasn't a specific word, phrase, or strategy, and it didn't deter us from continuing on. However, it was enough for us to take note of the oddity.
Then suddenly, it hit us. We had been duped. The machine had successfully altered its algorithm to the point where the output was able to "trick" even us, the people who had knowingly written and submitted the prompt to a machine. It only took a few simple words to completely flip everything on its head. And for that reason, we shifted our analysis to focus on the cause and impact of realizing we had been deceived.
Intensity of Response
One of the most shocking findings was the intensity of our feelings when we realized we had been "duped". In the past, if skepticism or distrust started brewing, the most intense response would be a "rolling-of-the-eyes" reaction followed by us exiting the page. But this time, our natural response was much more intense. We felt angry. We were deceived. It became personal.
Strangely enough, we didn't direct our intense feelings towards the "robot" that generated the content. The robot instantly disappeared from our minds. Instead, our frustrations were aimed directly at the person behind the prompt. The person who fine-tuned the prompt well enough that the output was strong enough for us to fabricate a human-like persona of this author. The person who "tricked" us into thinking we were reading authentic opinions from a genuine expert. Silently discrediting them by bouncing off the page was not enough this time. We wanted to outwardly discredit them and make it known that this person is not to be trusted.
Loss of Trust and Credibility
It all came down to a few key phrases that made us lose all trust in the author's opinion and credibility. It wasn't just a phrase or two that rubbed us the wrong way, but it was enough for us to lose trust in anything the "author" said. We had started to become invested in the "author's" perspective, almost convincing ourselves of their authenticity. But a few particular phrases shattered that trust.
The intensity of our response went beyond skepticism or distrust and veered towards anger and deceit. We were angry at being deceived, and it felt personal. The impact of realizing we had been duped made us reflect on the fundamental issue with AI-powered content and the potential consequences of trusting it blindly.
Impact of Key Phrases
The experience of being deceived by AI-generated content made us realize the power and potential dangers of this technology. It only took a few words to convince us of the content's authenticity, and the intensity of our response when we realized we had been duped was shocking. We directed our frustrations towards the person behind the prompt, wanting to discredit them publicly. This experience highlighted the importance of critical thinking and the need to be cautious when consuming AI-generated content.
